Santa Cruz fire, police investigate fire on Bay Street

The Santa Cruz Fire Department is investigating a fire on Bay Street with help from the Santa Cruz Police Department.

The fire happened Nov. 10 around 4 p.m.

Units from the Santa Cruz Fire Department, Central Fire Protection District and Scotts Valley Fire Protection District responded.

At first, crews were told someone was trapped inside. When firefighters arrived at the duplex, there was a working garage fire with a person standing outside. Firefighters gained entry and determined no one was inside.

The person standing outside was burned and did suffer inhalation injuries, but declined medical attention.

After putting the fire out, crews stayed on scene for about two hours salvaging what they could inside. The Santa Cruz Fire Department estimates they saved about $700,000 in property. The fire caused about $200,000 in damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
