Santa Cruz Police investigate fatal hit-and-run on Encinal Street

UPDATE: 12/14/2017 3:30 p.m. Santa Cruz Police recovered surveillance video showing a large industrial size truck had struck and killed a pedestrian on Encinal Street Thursday morning.

Police determined the incident to be a fatal hit-and-run and began following up on leads to track down the driver.

Detectives located the driver who told police he was unaware that he hit the pedestrian. Investigators said the driver was fully cooperative. The driver was not arrested or cited.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Police are not releasing the identity of the victim at this time.

PREVIOUS STORY: At least one person is dead after a hit-and-run accident in Santa Cruz Thursday morning.

According to Santa Cruz Police, an unknown driver struck and killed a man around 7:30 a.m. on the 100 block of Encinal Street. Officers arrived and found the male victim dead in the middle of the street after the driver fled the scene.

Police shut down Encinal Street between Highway 9 and Limekiln Street. Drivers are advised to use an alternate route.

Investigators are on scene canvasing the area and looking to review any surveillance video that might lead them to a suspect.

Santa Cruz Police have not released the identity of the victim.
