Capitola police investigate house fire death

UPDATE: 12/12/2017 12:12 p.m.

Firefighters found a mans body inside a burning home in Capitola over the weekend.

According to Central Fire District, firefighters responded to a report of a house fire at 717 Sunset Drive around 12:24 a.m. Sunday.

Firefighters attacked the fire from a neighboring property on Riverview Drive. Officials said the fire was in a granny unit located on Sunset Drive but the fire was threatening the neighboring property.

The fire burned a bedroom, hallway, and attic space. It took crews about an hour to control the flames. There was heat and smoke damage throughout the remainder of the home.

There was no fire damage to the main house.

Firefighters found the remains of 40-year-old Capitola resident Gabriel Dixon. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office have not released the cause of death. During the fire fight the body of a cat was also recovered.

As far as how the fire started, Central Fire said there were electrical power fluctuations reported in the neighborhood before the fire. The cause remains under investigation.
