UPDATE: Suspect identified for Gilroy homicide

UPDATE 12/7/17: Gilroy Police have identified a suspect wanted for the city’s first homicide of the year.

According to police, a warrant has been issued for 20-year-old Jay Robert Vasquez.

Vasquez should be considered armed and dangerous.

The victim has been identified as 32-year-old Jason Contreras of Gilroy.

The murder is being investigated as gang-related.

The Gilroy Police Department is investigating the city’s first homicide of the year.

According to police, a shooting took place moments after an argument broke out between two men on the 7500 block of Alexander Street. The verbal argument and shooting occurred on November 29 around 4:34 p.m.

Officers found a 32-year-old victim outside the home with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency personnel performed life-saving measures but the man died at the scene.

“This is an active and ongoing investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes appropriate. This is the 1st homicide in the City of Gilroy this year,” said Gilroy Police.

No suspect information has been released by police.

The Investigations Bureau asks anyone who may have seen anything or has information on the shooting to call Detective Eric Cryar at 408-846-0335.
