Lightning knocks down powerlines in Watsonville

The Santa Cruz County Communications Center advises the public to stay away from several roadways in Watsonville after lightning struck a transformer Monday.

The lightning hit the transformer on 131 Grant Avenue and Marchant Street just before 5 p.m.

More than 700 PG&E customers affected.

Residents are asked to stay inside their homes and for drivers to avoid the following areas;

Riverside Drive

Lincoln Street

Maple Avenue

Union Street
