Shark Seen Swimming Near Man Who Allegedly Took to Sea To Flee Cops

What started as a speeding violation on North Shore Drive in Surf City, North Carolina turned into an hours long chase into the ocean off Pender County.

Officers pulled over 20-year-old Zachary Kingsbury and his friend after police said the car sped by them.
Police said they found drugs in the car. That’s when they said Kingsbury took off.

“I just was running off adrenaline, being scared that I was going to get in trouble,” said Kingsbury.

He ran to the beach and began swimming out to sea. Officers used a drone to keep track of him until the battery died.

The drone footage showed that at least one shark was swimming nearby.

“They told me there were a couple sharks circling me, but I didn’t see any sharks when I was in the water, so I was not aware of that at the time,” said Kingsbury.

Kingsbury said he is just happy he was not bitten.

“From there it turned from chasing someone into a rescue mission, because they thought there might be a dead body,” said Kingsbury.

North Topsail Beach Police finally arrested Kingsbury about 3 and a half hours after the traffic stop at the Wicker Avenue beach access.

Police arrested Kingsbury’s friend during the stop. Kingsbury is charged with resisting arrest and drug and paraphernalia possession.
