MIIS an international hub for terrorism research

UPDATE 6/14/2016 10:15 PM: The mass shooting in Orlando is bringing new attention to the fight against terrorism.

“We use these as case studies to think about why these attacks take place, how movements are evolving, and what sort of tactics they’re using, who the most important groups are,” said Sharad Joshi.

Joshi is an assistant professor for the Monterey Terrorism Research Program at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey. The school has become a hub for studying terrorism around the world.

Students will now look at all aspects of the shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando.

“That helps us think about what sort of practices, policies, countries should adopt to roll back terrorist groups and prevent these attacks from taking place in the future,” said Joshi.

Students also learn about how terror groups are financed and ways they recruit. On Tuesday, President Obama said the shooter in Orlando was influenced online.

“We currently do not have any information that a foreign terrorist group directed the attack in Orlando, it is increasingly clear however that the killer took in extremist information and propaganda over the internet he appears to have been an angry disturbed unstable young man who became radicalized,” said the President.

It’s the education happening here that Joshi said is used in the real world, as many students go on to work for the government. A published student report recently looked at how antiques trafficking is funding terror groups.

“That’s very cutting edge research because this is then used by governments and policy makers to better understand and come up with policy solutions,” said Joshi.
