Helping homeless veterans with housing
As people across the country take time to honor and thank our veterans, one non-profit is looking to expand its housing for homeless veterans.
According to the 2015 Monterey County Point-In-Time Census taken earlier this year, about 141 homeless veterans live in Monterey County. That’s actually down 38% based on data gathered in 2013.
For nearly 20 years, the Veterans Transition Center has been helping veterans. The organization offers transitional housing for up to 56 veterans for up to two years. However, they hope to expand those housing services to help more veterans.
“We received a $5.9 million grant from the government to develop permanent supportive housing, meaning once you qualify for the program, you can stay here as long as you want, as long as you qualify,” VTC Deputy Executive Director Edwin Marticorena said.
