Rome (CNN) — Pope Leo XIV will leave hospital on Saturday, four days after undergoing lung cancer surgery, the Vatican says.
The first American pope was admitted to the Gemelli hospital on Tuesday with doctors removing a nodule that was determined to be pulmonary adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer.
“In light of the blood tests and the chest X-ray performed this morning, and following an assessment of his clinical status, the Holy Father has been deemed fit for discharge,” his doctors, Dr. Luigi Carbone and Prof. Stefano Margaritora, said.
The pontiff will likely leave the hospital on Saturday afternoon and return to the Vatican, after celebrating a midday mass at the medical facility.
He is also due to deliver the traditional Sunday blessing from a window overlooking St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, a week after he told crowds he would be needing surgery.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
