Fremont fatal shooting was home invasion burglary that ended with resident killing teenage suspect, police say

A fatal shooting in a Fremont neighborhood on Friday began as a home invasion robbery that ended with the resident wresting a gun from one of the teenage suspects and opening fire, police said.
The incident happened at about 12:13 p.m. Friday on San Pedro Drive in the city’s Cabrillo neighborhood, adjacent to Interstate Highway 880. The Fremont Police Department issued an update about the case on Monday, saying that the incident involved an armed home invasion by two teen suspects.
According to police, the suspects forced their way into the home and assaulted the occupants. During the struggle, one of the residents was able to gain control of a suspect’s gun and shot at them, fatally wounding one of the suspects, police said.
Officers arrived to find the teenager who had been shot and provided medical assistance. He was taken to a local trauma center where he died of his injuries, police said.
The second teen suspect ran away but was eventually located and arrested. He was taken to the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center in San Leandro and booked on charges of residential burglary and felony assault with a semiautomatic firearm.
Two residents were hurt with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.
The homicide was Fremont’s third in 2026.
