Wildfire burns near Vacaville’s Pena Adobe Park

A vegetation fire near Peña Adobe Park in Vacaville prompted park closures and blocked lanes on eastbound Interstate 80 early Thursday afternoon before crews stopped its forward progress.

Vacaville Fire crews were dispatched shortly before noon to the blaze near Peña Adobe Park and Butcher Road in the Hume Grove area. The fire, initially called the Peña Fire before being renamed the Cherry Fire, was estimated at 2 acres with no containment.

Officials initially reported that the fire was spreading rapidly, with wind driving flames north. Air resources were called in to help attack the blaze.

Just before 1 p.m., the city said firefighters had stopped the fire’s forward progress following an aerial attack.

Peña Adobe Park and Lagoon Valley Park are closed for the remainder of the day, officials said.

CHP said two eastbound I-80 lanes were closed between Peña Adobe and Alamo Drive because of the fire. No estimated reopening time was immediately available.

Peña Adobe Park and the adjoining Lagoon Valley Park sit along I-80 on the western side of Vacaville.
