Caddying in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am
If you’ve been to a professional golf tournament, you’ve probably noticed the person carrying the player’s golf bags.
They’re called caddies and they do a lot more than just carry the clubs.
The professional golfers usually have their own caddies, but many of the celebrities you’ll see at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am will either bring a friend, find someone through the pebble beach pro shop or use someone that’s caddied with them before.
PGA professional and York High School golf coach Bentley Mundle has been caddying the pro-am for country music star Clay Walker for several years now and their history goes way back. In fact, Walker used to talk golf lessons from Mundle’s grandfather.
Mundle told KION that it’s a lot fun caddying for celebrities like Walker, but there is also a lot of pressure. This is what he had to say about the first time he caddied for clay in the 3M Celebrity challenge.
“Everyone is watching you and the green is cleared and you’re out there walking to a spot with the player saying I want you to putt it right here. You know everyone gets to see where you just pointed to and they line up and I think to myself I hope I’m right. It feels great when they make it because you think I do know what I’m doing out here,” explained Mundle.
However, reading putts is just part of the job description. A caddy also has to make sure the players are feeling good out there and keep the positive energy going.
“You know players will have their caddies for a long time because they are a team together. It’s a special relationship because the caddy gets to do a lot. They get to be the cheerleader, golf coach, kind of do it all.”
Mundle said being asked to caddy in a tournament like the pro-am is a great honor.
