Caltrans: Highway 1 to reopen at Mud Creek and Paul’s Slide

UPDATE 1/18/19 9:00 a.m. Caltrans is reopening Highway 1 at Mud Creek and Paul’s Slide in the Big Sur Area.

That portion of Highway 1 should be open by 10 a.m. after the National Weather Service confirmed significant storms have passed the Mud Creek and Paul’s Slide area.

UPDATE 1/16/2019 4:30 p.m. Caltrans says the closure of Highway 1 will be extending north from Paul’s Slite to Deetjen’s/Fullers Point.

The extension will start at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday because of rain in the area.

Highway 1 was already closed at Mud Creek and Paul’s Slide because of the storm.

Storm activity is forecast through Thursday, Jan. 17.

Caltrans activated electronic message signs letting drivers know there’s a closure.

Nacimiento-Fergusson Road is the alternate route to reach Hwy. 1 between Mud Creek and Paul’s Slide.

“There is a 40-ft. length, 12-foot height, 60-ton weight, and 10 mph restriction at one of the bridges along this route,” said Caltrans spokeswoman, Susana Cruz.

Construction units are on call to inspect and clean up when the storm ends.

Caltrans said their goal is to open the roadway by Jan. 18.
