Salinas Public Works clearing storm drains ahead of rain

Rain is predicted to come down hard the next couple of days, and driving can become risky. “Mostly just the roads. You kind of worry if your car is going to make it through the water,” said Salinas resident, Diane Lopez.

City of Salinas Public Works is already preparing for flooding on the roads. “During the wet weather, which we’re in right now, we will take preventative measure to prevent any flooding,” said Ray Lerma, maintenance crew supervisor with the city.

Fallen branches, leaves, and trash can clog storm drains and back up water into the streets.

Hydro-vac trucks are one way city crews can take care of flooding, fast. “We’ll use water pressure through a hose. We’ll unblock it using that method. We also have trucks that vacuum. We’re able to take care of all the problems we see with that truck, said Lerma.

These giant, high-pressure vacuums get water flowing, again. They’re used most often in neighborhoods near Gavilan, Natividad, and Alisal Creeks, where flooding is a persistent issue.

Crews will clean up to 100 storms drains a day, in preparation for a storm like this. The city urges residents to keep an eye out, as well.

Public works will respond to calls after hours during the storm. To report flooding after 3:30 p.m., call 831-758-7321.
