22-year-old Davis police officer killed in shooting

UPDATE: 7:17 am: Davis Police confirmed the suspect in the shooting death of a police officer has been found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

This comes as police were searching a residence on 5th Street in Davis where police believed the suspect was located.

22 year old police officer Natalie Corona was shot and killed Thursday evening as she was investigating the cause of a three-car collision near 5th and D Street.

It’s unknown why the suspect fired shots at Officer Corona at this time.

The suspect’s identity has not been released.

Officer Corona was a few weeks into her tenure on patrol.

“Natalie was just full of life and full of energy. Just an absolute pleasure to be around,” says her Police Chief Darren Pytel. “She just worked like you can’t believe. In fact there was a period of time before going into the academy where we ran out of funding for her paid position. Despite that she still came in and volunteered.”

It was after some time Corona was able to join the police academy. She had just completed the field training program recently.

“I’ve heard her described by our officers as our daughter, our friend and a sister we all wanted,” says Chief Pytel. “This is just an absolutely devastating loss to the police department.”

Officer Natalie Corona was following in the footsteps of her father Merced Corona, who also worked in law enforcement.

In a press conference, Chief Pytel expressed his condolences to the family of Natalie Corona. He described Natalie as an “absolute star in the department.”

Davis Police confirmed early Friday morning that the suspect did die of a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a manhunt that lasted several hours.

The suspect’s identity is unknown, however was initially described as a white male in his 20’s.

That has not been confirmed at this time.

11:50 p.m. A Davis police officer has died after being shot Thursday evening.

Davis Police said 22 -year-old Natalie Corona sustained a bullet wound after responding to a three-car crash.

Corona was sworn in as an officer just two weeks ago. She followed in her father Merced Corona’s footsteps to work in law enforcement.

She graduated from the police academy in July of 2018.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office is taking over the investigation.

Investigators are in a standoff at a residence in Davis. Police robots have entered the residence but there has not been any movement in the house, according to Sacramento affiliate KOVR.
