Officials recover body found off Davenport cliff
UPDATE 01/08/19 6:40 p.m.The body found at the bottom of a 100-foot cliff in Davenport has been identified as 20-year-old Cameron Poole of Los Gatos.
It is unclear at this time if Poole fell or was already in the location at the time of response, but he had not been there long.
Battalion Chief, Aldo Gonzalez with Cal Fire says they first got the report around 10:45 this morning, “the initial report was a person was up here somewhere and saw the body and called 911.”
Officials from Cal Fire, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, Santa Cruz Fire and California State Parks responded to the incident.
After getting down to the body, the challenge was getting Poole and the first responders out safely as they faced high tide and waves said Gonzalez, “there’s a lot of equations here that can get everyone hurts bad, so we have to move low and slow and methodically and run the numbers and get it done.”
They originally called in a helicopter to do the extraction, but due to weather, first responders had to carry the body up the cliff. “There’s a lot of training and stuff that goes on, we have a guy up here counting the waves, the duration how many sets there are, looking for a rogue waves, slipping and falling, rope rescue equipment.”
The Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the cause of death, but officials say they are urging people to be careful when they are visiting that area, “use your head when you guys come out here, it’s dangerous, it’s beautiful, but natures beauty is also deadly and think about what you are doing and be careful.”
