Storm restricts beach access and activities on Monterey Bay

As the storms rolls through the Monterey Bay, a typically busy Sunday on Cannery Row turns quiet.

“Our plan was to go to the beach and take pictures but that didn’t work out very well,” said tourist, Nicole Zalinski.

Adventures by the Sea, one of the area’s largest outdoor activity businesses, closed up shop early, Sunday.

“We could see more than 200 people on a sunny day. On a day like today, we may see a handful of people,” said Adventures by the Sea Owner, Kyle Wareham.

It was near impossible to hop on a bike or kayak on a day like, Sunday. Gusts up to 60 miles per hour meant danger for explorers.

Some areas along Cannery Row had restricted access to the beach. When access opens up, Adventures by the Sea said they want to give people a chance to get back out there: rain or shine.

“With inclement weather, specifically wind, we always want to provide guided activities. Whether it’s biking or kayaking, we want a guide to be out there with you to keep you safe,” said Wareham.

For now, tourists said they are sticking to the indoor options.

“It could be a nice walk down there, but we can’t do it, today. We only can go to the aquarium,” said tourist, Ruohan Wang.

Many chose to look on the bright side.

“Going around Cannery Row and looking at all the shops would’ve been a little bit more fun without the rain, but it cuts down on the crowds. We can’t complain too much,” said tourist, Jeffery Frick.
