Unattended BBQ pit plays role in mother, toddler, and infants death

The San Benito County Sheriff’s Office located the remains of three bodies on a property where a vegetation fire is burning.

The Panoche Fire started Monday night, and has spread to 64 acres.

Around 10:30 p.m., firefighters found a body in what appeared to be the remains of a camping trailer at a property in the 20000 block of Panoche Road.

After taking a closer look, detectives discovered the remains were of a 27-year-old woman, her 3-year-old son and 8-month-old daughter.

Captain Eric Taylor told KION they believe the fire started from an unattended bbq pit. He said the family relocated from Gilroy a couple weeks ago.

The sheriff’s office is not releasing the victims names at this time.

Cal Fire is investigating the origin and cause of the fire. The Panoche Fire is 95 percent contained.
