Protest against offshore drilling set for Saturday
In early January President Trump and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke announced their intention to open up California’s coastal water to new oil production. Save Our Shores has orchestrated a protest against this proposal.
The march will leave from Lighthouse Point Park at 10:00 a.m. and head towards Cowell Beach. There, a rally will happen at 11:00 a.m.. Save Our Shores began back in 1978, this year marks their 40th anniversary.
“It’s kind of interesting that we’ve come full circle to protecting our shore to offshore oil drilling. 40 years ago we won that battle and got the Monterey Bay designated as a National Marine Sanctuary. But here we are with an unusual administration in DC kind of fighting that same battle,” said Executive Director of Save Our Shores, Katherine O’Dea.
State Senator Bill Monning, Congressman Jimmy Panetta, Secretary of National Resources John laird, Santa Cruz Mayor David Terrazas, Assembly Member Mark Stone, the list goes on, they will all be at the rally on Saturday.
President Trump and supporters of the proposal argue drilling off the coast of California is a way to end our dependence on foreign oil.
