Multi-million dollar project will increase pedestrian and bike safety in East Salinas

The City of Salinas is trying to make travel safer on roads right in front of an elementary school.

We’re talking about the areas of Bardin Road, Alisal Street, Alisal Road and Sconberg Parkway. Bardin Road would see improvements all the way up to Williams Road. Assistant public works director Don Reynolds said this intersection is one that has never really been improved since it was incorporated into the city boundaries. So the roads have stayed rural, while everything around has continued to grow.

“What we’re trying to do is not only make it safer for children and parents to get to and from our schools. But to help it occur by foot and by bike. Wouldn’t it be great if we could return to the day when kids can ride their bikes to school?” said Don Reynolds.

On Wednesday night, the City will present the draft design which includes roundabouts, ADA enhancements, and new street lighting at crosswalks. This project costs more than $7 Million and will be funded by grants. If everything goes as planned, they would like to break ground June 2018.
