Gilroy man veers off roadway, strikes stop sign and dies

The California Highway Patrol is investigating an accident that left one Gilroy man dead over the weekend.

A 57-year-old man driving a 2012 Tundra with a trailer attached was going westbound on Calle Celestina, east of Watsonville Road in Gilroy, when he veered off the road and crashed. The accident occurred Saturday around 6:30 a.m. The truck collided with a stop sign and then continued across Watsonville Road where the driver hit a wooden fence.

A resident nearby came across the accident and called 911 around 7:45 a.m. Emergency personnel attempted to revive the Gilroy man but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP said its unknown if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash. The investigation is ongoing but investigators said there is a possibility the driver may have had a traumatic medical event before the accident occurred.
