Mazda racers visit SPCA and meet adoptable Hurricane Irma dog

At least a dozen animals were taken in by the SPCA for Monterey County after Hurricane Irma hit Florida.

Friday racers from Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca visited the SPCA to meet the rescued pets named after them. Captain is one of 12 animals, five dogs and seven cats, taken in by the SPCA from shelters in Florida. SPCA officials said the rescued pets were already awaiting adoption when the hurricane hit and were brought to California to help shelters make room for pets lost or abandoned during the storm.

Captain will be up for adoption after 3 p.m. Friday.

“The other eleven pets are still recovering from all they have been through. The seven cats and one dog are receiving treatment for fungal infections. Thankfully, all the dogs tested negative for heartworm, a life-threatening condition common in the gulf coast region,” said Beth Brookhouser, SPCA Director of Community Outreach.

Mazda Raceway and the SPCA are offering three pairs of 3-day general admission and paddock tickets to the first three visitors after 3 p.m. who mention Mazda. The shelter is open until 5 p.m.
