UPDATE: Fisherman missing off Big Sur coast identified, presumed dead

UPDATE: 8/25/2017 11:29 a.m. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office released the name of the missing fisherman who was swept of the rocks in Big Sur as, Ying Jie Xi.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Xi of Fremont was reported missing on August 20 after a large wave swept him off the rocks near Garrapata State Park.

The search has been suspended, and authorities presume Xi is dead.

8/24/2017 5:00 p.m. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said the search for a missing fisherman of Fremont has been called off.

The fisherman was swept of a rock on Sunday, August 20. Authorities have not released a name.

Authorities are searching for a fisherman swept out to sea in Big Sur.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Aerosquad helicopter helped with a massive search effort for a fisherman who was knocked off the rocks by a big wave near Garrapata State Park.

The incident occurred on Sunday night. Cal Fire used their boat from Point Lobos while firefighters searched from the rocks above. California State Parks lifeguards and rescue swimmers from Mid-Coast Fire were in the water searching kelp beds for the missing fisherman.

Search efforts were suspended Sunday night and continued Monday morning. The fisherman has not been found.
