More work to begin Tuesday on new Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge

Another big step to reconnecting Big Sur as work is scheduled to begin on the installation of the girders for the new Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge.

Caltrans said it is part of the work they are doing to make the bridge stronger than the force that took out the old bridge after a rough winter.

The path to rebuilding hasn’t been easy, but they’re getting closer to bringing in the new one. Crews will install the girders at noon Tuesday, August 22nd.

“There will be a system of cables that will slowly guide this superstructure if you will across the canyon. It’s very delicate, precise work and it does represent a major milestone in the rebuilding of this bridge,” said Caltrans Spokesperson Jim Shivers.

The new bridge will be different from the old bridge without columns.

“What ultimately ended the life of this particular bridge was a major mudslide which impacted the columns beneath the bridge leading to the demolition. By building this bridge without columns, it really eliminates the threat that this bridge would be damaged by any future landslide.”

Caltrans says the designers have worked constantly to create the plans for the new bridge.

“The design process or period is about one year so we were able to expedite that job with designers working seven days a week doing the work of 12 months in about four weeks.”

The engineers and contractors that tore down the old bridge are also now part of building the new one.

“We’re still looking at a schedule of reopening of late September for this bridge,” said Shivers.

The new bridge will cost 24 million dollars.
