Scotts Valley: Dozens of dogs rescued in animal hoarding case, 3 dead

More than 30 dogs were rescued from a home in Scotts Valley following a search warrant.

Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter officials rescued 34 dogs including, Boston Terriers, Tibetan Spaniels and a Chihuahua mix. The rescue took place on June 15. The Animal Shelter said nearly all have been placed in new homes.

Many of the dogs had medical conditions that required significant veterinary care, including removing rotten and abscessed teeth, blood-work, special diets, supplements and medications, antibiotics, ear cleaning and umbilical hernia repairs. Officials said some female dogs appeared to have been bred repeatedly.

Three dogs had to be euthanized.

The case began after a concerned citizen contacted the Animal Shelter regarding numerous dogs being kept in what they called inhumane conditions at a residence in Scotts Valley.

Animal Shelter officials found powerful odors and dogs stacked in airline crates in a small dark room with no ventilation.
