Florida Deputies involved in shooting, cleared of any wrong doing

Two Okaloosa County Deputies involved in the shooting of a man and a woman in Destin Florida were cleared of any wrong doing.

The body camera footage of the shooting released shows the minutes leading up to the shooting, as well as the aftermath.

There are two different camera angles of the shooting. The video started with the two deputies, Jeffery Cantwell and Paul Rodriguez exiting their cruiser when they located a car matching an attempt to locate a man from Nashville.

That man, Randy Patton was believed by his wife to be suicidal. She called police in Nashville after Patton sent her a text with a photo of a semi-automatic handgun with the message goodbye.

The vehicle was located at the Days Inn off Highway 98 in Destin.

Deputies exited the vehicle to check the tag, when Patton and his girlfriend walked out of a room.

In the video you can hear deputies tell Patton instructions on what to do and he complied at first. Then Patton reached behind his back and pulled out what deputies later determined to be a bb gun.

When deputies fired, a woman, Judy Williams exited a different room four doors down, she was also shot in her calf.

Williams told investigators she had stepped outside, heard a man yell get on the ground, got scared and turned around to walk back in the room. When she turned around, facing the door she heard gunshots and quickly realized she had been shot.

Patton’s girlfriend wrote in a statement that the officers fired without warning and that Patton had been shot with his back turned and his hands in the air. The video shows that’s not true.

Both Patton and Judy Williams were treated for their injuries and both survived.
