Salinas man sentenced for first degree murder of wife’s ex-husband

A Salinas man has been convicted of first degree murder of a Watsonville man in 2016.

According to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office, 46-year-old Alexander Winn of Salinas was sentenced to 31 years-to-life in prison for the first-degree murder of 50-year-old David Derrington of Watsonville. The homicide occurred on February 21, of 2016.

The D.A.’s Office said in 2015, David Derrington began the eviction process to regain possession of his former home in North Monterey County, after his ex-wife, Traci Derrington-Winn and her husband, Alexander Winn, backed out on an agreement to buy him out. After Winn and his wife refused to move out, Derrington used a court order to remove them from the house with the help of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. On February 9, 2016 the Sheriff’s Office forcibly removed Winn and his wife from the house. On the day of eviction Winn made numerous threats to kill Derrington.

On February 21, 2016, both Derrington and Winn were at the North County property picking up items left behind. Winn stabbed Derrington twenty-two times, nine penetrating the lungs, with a nine-inch military-style knife.

The investigation was led by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and assisted by Monterey County District Attorney’s Office.
