Trauma and immigration: Mental health concerns over immigration policies

A mental health organization is helping immigrants in Monterey County cope with the stresses and fears of immigration policies.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness or NAMI held a community presentation Thursday night in Salinas called “Latinos and Mental Health: Trauma & Immigration.”

NAMI Monterey County hosted the event to talk about the mental health effects such as anxiety, stress, depression and trauma that immigrant communities face as a result of immigration.

“Often times we’ve been seeing that a lot of the events in the community have been focusing on immigrant rights and the legal perspective, we wanted to highlight the mental health perspective,” said Deanna Rivas, program supervisor with NAMI.

Though it was a one night only event, they connect people year-round to resources. To find out more just click here or call 831-422-6264.
