Failing bridge replacement in southern Santa Cruz County
Work to replace Casserly Road Bridge in Watsonville begins on Thursday, according to the County of Santa Cruz Department of Public Works. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area if possible.
The county calls the failing bridge, located between Casserly Road and Smith Road, “a key connecting route for South County residents and businesses.”
It will be closed to all traffic between Thursday, June 22 and Friday, August 11. A detour route will put in place in advance of the closure.
The bridge is just 11 feet long. Jason Hoppin, Santa Cruz County communications manager, says Casserly Road Bridge is degrading after damage caused by winter storms.
“The new bridge will enhance public safety for residents, students and businesses in the neighborhood. We need to make sure that the construction is expedited so it is completed at fast as possible,” said Santa Cruz County Supervisor Greg Caput in a written statement.
