Authorities are crediting students and an on-campus resource officer for making sure this incident at Soquel High School ended safely.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office says a senior at Soquel High School was quickly detained by the school’s resource officer after getting a tip that he had a gun in his backpack. Investigators say 18-year old Andrew Sullano was pulled out of class and was found with a 9mm handgun with ten rounds in the clip inside his backpack, as well as some oxycodone and marijuana. He was arrested and booked in the Santa Cruz County Jail.

The sheriff’s office is crediting student’s use of social media for circulating the information about the gun until one of the students finally notified school faculty.

“The immediacy of the action taken by the school, by the deputy on scene, and school security. that’s why we have school resource officers. we have them there to take action and protect the kids that are there. In this case, as soon as that information was relayed to them, they made an immediate plan to go contact that student just as quickly as they could,” said Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Chris Clark.

Right now, investigators don’t believe Sullano was carrying the gun to harm anyone, but rather had it for protection. Later, Sullano’s home was searched, where deputies found a shotgun, shotgun ammunition, 9mm ammunition, and a small amount of meth and marijuana.

Sullano will be facing several felony and misdemeanor charges and the sheriff’s office believes he will be facing expulsion from Soquel High as that is standard procedure for a student bringing a weapon on campus.
