Inmate who walked away from Ben Lomond Conservation Camp was caught in Santa Cruz area
An inmate who walked away from the Ben Lomond Conservation Camp on Wednesday was recaptured in the Santa Cruz area, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials said.
The inmate identified as 40 year-old, Russell Helton, was recaptured Saturday. Helton had been assigned to an inmate firefighting crew near Santa Cruz, which houses about 100 minimum-custody inmates. Helton was discovered missing by a camp staff.
CDCR officials said Helton will be taken back to the California Correctional Center in Susanville and will no longer be eligible to be housed in a conservation camp.
