One dead in Prunedale house fire

UPDATE 10/31/16 12:26 PM: A 67-year-old woman was killed Sunday night when her Prunedale home was engulfed by fire.

According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, there were two people inside the home when its second floor caught fire. A passerby was able to rescue an elderly woman from the home’s first floor, but the woman’s adult daughter couldn’t escape from the home’s second floor.

Firefighters recovered her body at 7:20 p.m., about 50 minutes after the fire was first reported.

Neither woman’s identity was immediately available.

An official with the North County Fire District in Castroville said Monday the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

ORIGINAL STORY: A woman was killed late Sunday night in a house fire on Berta View Drive near Prunedale, according to a woman who identified herself as the woman’s daughter.

As of 9:30 p.m. Sunday the street was filled with fire trucks and police cars.
