Fort Ord munitions detonated

If you heard a loud “boom” around 11 a.m. Wednesday morning, you weren’t alone. The loud noise came from the former Fort Ord, where cleanup crews were scheduled to detonate unused munitions.

Detonations are planned periodically by the Fort Ord Base Realignment and Closure office to dispose of munitions or unexploded ordnance.

The explosion was heard as far away as Watsonville.
