Santa Cruz murder suspect arrested in Kansas City

UPDATE 10/21/16 12:25 PM: Murder suspect Kasey Gaskell was arrested at approximately midnight Friday October 21 , 2016. in Kansas City, MO according to the Santa Cruz Police Department. Gaskell is suspected of killing his mother, Shannon Magner, on September 26, 2016.

Acting on a tip, Kansas City police found and arrested Gaskell at a homeless shelter.

PREVIOUS STORY: A man wanted for murdering his mom in Santa Cruz is still on the run and was spotted in Kansas a few days after the homicide.

Santa Cruz Police said Kasey Gaskell was last seen in Kansas City, Kansas on September 23 rd . He may have been traveling toward the Green Bay/Greenleaf area of Wisconsin when his trail went cold.

His mother, 66-year-old Shannon Magner, was found dead in an apartment on Front Street on Monday, September 26 th , but investigators believe Magner was killed on September 21 st .

Investigators also learned Gaskell had rented the apartment where the victim’s body was found.

SCPD detectives are investigating leads to find more information on Gaskell’s whereabouts.

Police still don’t have a motive for the murder.

The Santa Cruz Police Department and the Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office have asked the FBI to help in the search for Gaskell. They have requested a federal warrant for Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution.

Anyone with information on Gaskell’s location is asked to call 9-1-1, their local police department, sheriff’s office or local FBI office.
