State will fund changes to Broadway Avenue in Seaside

The state announced Friday it will spend $3.7 million to convert Broadway Avenue between Fremont Street and Del Monte Boulevard in downtown Seaside into a two-lane roadway with expanded bicycle and pedestrian lanes.

The project will complete the final leg of a bicycle corridor connecting the Monterey Bay Coastal Tail and General Jim Moore Boulevard.

The Broadway Avenue project is among 71 projects that will receive $244 million in funds according to the California Transportation Commission. The projects include improvements to highways, bridges and passenger rail systems. Twenty-nine bicycle and pedestrian projects throughout the state are also included.

“Investing in our infrastructure benefits Californians for generations to come and these projects will improve mobility and expand choices for all users of the transportation system, whether they choose to travel by car, take transit or ride a bicycle,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty in a statement.

The City of Seaside says construction will begin sometime in the spring or summer of 2017.
