Police warn of 911 telephone scams

The Seaside Police Department issued a warning Monday about phone scammers who pose as government or law enforcement officials and demand money.

Police say the scammers’ caller ID often looks like a legitimate government number such as 911. Callers tell victims there is a problem and ask victims for personal financial information or payment to avoid punishment such as deportation or arrest.

A victim called police on Thursday, October 13, to say a scammer with a 911 caller ID demanded $250.

The scammers often instruct victims to withdraw money from a nearby bank or purchase a money order, prepaid gift card or make a wire transfer or money exchange.

Police say government agencies never demand financial payment or information over the phone or by email. If you are required to make payment, you will be mailed a letter on official stationery requesting payment.

Police say you should hang up and notify police immediately if you get such a call.
