Stroller falls down elevator shaft, kills baby

A six-week-old baby died after a stroller fell down a Brooklyn elevator shaft Thursday, according to New York Police. Officers said the child’s mother saw the doors open, stepped forward but the elevator was not there and the stroller fell.

The woman was on the 23rd floor at the time of the incident. The stroller fell down six stories, hitting the top of an elevator car on the 17th floor.

The baby girl has been identified as Areej Ali, of Brooklyn. She was pronounced dead at Coney Island Hospital. According to reports, the building had dozens of elevator violations over the last 15 years. The building has a history of residents complaining about broken elevators and other maintenance problems.

It is unclear if maintenance workers were on the site at the time.The investigation is ongoing.
