High surf, coastal flooding possible Friday

An unseasonably strong storm system will bring wind, rain and high surf to the region on Friday.

The National Weather Service in Monterey has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory and a High Surf Advisory for all immediate coastal areas in Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties from 3AM to 9PM Friday.

Coastal flooding will be possible on Friday along the immediate coastline due to a combination of high tide and beaches in their summer sand profiles. These summer sand profiles are poor in preventing wave run-up and allow wave s to reach farther inland.

Forerunner waves will arrive early Friday morning then larger waves will arrive through the day. Northwest swell of 14-16 feet at a period of 16 to 18 seconds is expected. A larger swell train arrives on Sunday.

Strong rip currents may quickly exhaust swimmers. Large shore break can lead to injury and large wave run-up can pull unsuspecting people into the cold and turbulent waters. Ponding of water along low-lying immediate coastal areas will also be possible.
