UPDATE: Local PG&E crews no longer headed to Florida

UPDATE 10/7/16 7:37 AM: PG&E officials say due to the path of Hurricane Matthew and the assessment of the impacts so far, Florida officials have adequate resources on the ground and won’t be needing assistance.

A team of eleven Pacific Gas & Electric crew members out of Salinas will travel to Florida to help restore power from damage caused by Hurricane Matthew. Florida Power and Light is predicting that about 2.5 million homes and businesses will lose service.

In total, 100 PG&E employees are flying out of Sacramento early Friday on a chartered jet. They are expected to be there at least a week while rebuilding the electric infrastructure.

In 2015, PG&E sent about 70 line workers, managers and safety specialists to the Pacific Northwest to support Avista after a devastating storm impacted its customers in Washington and Idaho.

In 2012, around 250 PG&E employees worked to restore power to customers in New York after Hurricane Sandy. The massive storm that struck the Eastern Seaboard resulted in power outages to 8 million customers.
