Southern California on heightened earthquake alert

The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services has issued a heightened earthquake warning for Southern California that will stay in effect through Tuesday. The alert comes after 142 temblors were reported last week northeast of San Diego in the Salton Sea, which is located on the San Andreas Fault. The magnitude of the quakes ranged from 1.4 to 4.3 according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It affects residents in Ventura, San Diego, Kern, Los Angeles, Riverside, Imperial and San Bernardino counties. Scientists believe that an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 or higher has a high probability of shaking up the state between now and Tuesday.
