UPDATE: Highway 68 re-opened after fire near Morse Gate

UPDATE 8/31/16 4:39 AM: California Highway Patrol officials confirm Highway 68 has been re-opened.

UPDATE 8/30/16 5:42 PM: Monterey Fire said the fire along Highway 68 is less than an acre and is contained.

Crews expect the highway to be closed for a few more hours.

UPDATE 8/30/16 5:21 PM: PG&E said power was restored for all customers by 5:10 p.m.

PREVIOUS STORY: Crews are responding to a fire along Holman Highway 68 near Pacific Grove, where a tree reportedly fell down on a power line, according to CHP.

Crews on scene report the fire is spreading in the brush on the east side of the road.

PG&E says power initially went out for more than 6,000 people. Service has been restored for most residents, but about 500 are still without power.

Officers say Highway 68 is closed to traffic at the Samuel F.B. Morse Gate.
