Students to return to their schools in Big Sur, evacuation warnings lifted

The Soberanes Fire on the Central Coast has disrupted the schedules of students and their families at two schools in the Carmel Unified School District since August 10th, due to an evacuation warning triggered by the wildfire.

But those displaced students are heading back to their regular schedules and locations this Monday, August 29th, according to Paul Behan, Chief Technology Officer of the Carmel Unified School District.

The schools are Captain Cooper Elementary and Apple Pie Preschool, both located in Big Sur.

“This is not the first time the staff at Captain Cooper School and Apple Pie preschool have gone above and beyond during an emergency that affects the Big Sur community. They have consistently responded with generosity and caring to our students there,” Interim Superintendent Karen Hendricks was quoted in a press release, congratulating employees at a school board meeting earlier this week.
