Santa Cruz County wins national digital award

Santa Cruz County has been honored as the eighth most digital-friendly county in the nation according to the Center for Digital Government and the National Association of Counties.

The award recognizes local governments for technological innovation that supports open government, citizen engagement, cloud-based services, data-driven decision making and app development.

In a press release, county supervisor Zach Friend said, “Technology is our future, with the potential to help inform and engage residents, tear down socioeconomic barriers and open up opportunities. This award shows our County is at the forefront of e-government.”

Officials said the County has taken several steps to bolster its technological profile, including improved broadband infrastructure, expanded online services, enhanced web and social media presence and development of the “Citizen Connect” app for reporting and receiving emergency notifications.

“Whether it’s online, at home or out in the field, we want to be there whenever residents need us,” said supervisor Ryan Coonerty. “We have taken a number of steps in that regard, and this recognition is proof that Santa Cruz County is working to meet our constituents’ expectations.”

Santa Cruz County competed in a category for counties with populations between 250,000 and 499,999. The award will be presented July 23 at the 2016 NACo Annual Conference and Exposition in Long Beach.
