Grassfire burns along Highway 1 in Aptos

UPDATE 7/8/16 5:10 PM: Crews from CalFire and the Aptos/La Selva Fire Protection District contained the fire after it burned about 3/4 of an acre and destroyed one outbuilding but no residences. Four engines and a helicopter were used to contain the fire. The cause is under investigation.

UPDATE 7/8/16 3:10 PM: Firefighters have contained a grass fire that burned Friday afternoon in a field alongside Highway 1, just north of State Park Drive in Aptos.

The California Highway Patrol says the fire was contained about 2:45 p.m..

Just after 2:00 p.m., CHP units responded to reports of a fire in a tree on Heather Terrace, near Poppy Way. Smoke was reported visible from Seacliff State Beach.

PREVIOUS STORY: Firefighters are battling a grass fire alongside Highway 1, just north of State Park Drive in Aptos.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the fire broke out just after 2:00 Friday afternoon in a field near Poppy Way and a former par 3 golf course.
