Former King City cop gets early release from jail

UDATE 7/8/16 1:15 PM: Monterey County officials confirm Carrillo was released from jail late Thursday night.

PREVIOUS STORY: bobby Carrillo, one of six former King City police officers convicted in a car-towing scheme, is set to be released from jail after serving just over two months of his one-year sentence.

“He still deserves at least his year in jail,” said Monterey County Deputy District Attorney Steve Somers. “She (the judge) disagreed with us and let him go home instead and spend the rest of his time at his house.”

On Thursday, a Monterey County judge granted a defense motion for his early release from jail.

According to Somers, Carrillo’s attorney claimed Carrillo was depressed and had lost a significant amount of weight while spending much of his sentence in solitary confinement and was having trouble serving his jail term.

“There are a lot of people who can make that same claim in the jail. And I don’t know how many of those would be released for the same reasons,” said Somers. “When he was committing the crimes, he knew that if he was caught he would be put in jail and it would be very uncomfortable wherever he went because every officer knows that.”

Carrillo pleaded no contest in March to bribery and conspiracy for his involvement in a scheme to sell or take impounded cars targeting undocumented immigrants in 2014. Two former police chiefs were also involved.

Somers said Carrillo has until August 16, 2016, to apply for home confinement. If he is unable to complete his sentence at home, he will be returned to jail.
