Central Coasting: Monterey County wines becoming well known around the world

New regulations are on the horizon in Napa Valley, as the leading wine region tries to stop other States from claiming their vino as part of the prestigious brand, when it’s really not. If passed it could protect wine regions across the state, a push that makes sense to Monterey County Vintners & Growers Association Executive Director Kim Stemler.

“It’s about making sure your promoting your brand, that your brand is unified, and that you’re protecting your brand. In the late 90’s I think they passed a law like the one that we just passed, and now they’re much more interested in protecting their brand,” said Stemler.

Monterey County is also busy branding.

“Governor Jerry Brown signed it in August of 2015. It says if you label your bottle of wine with a sub AVA like Santa Lucia Highlands you need to have Monterey County or Monterey also on the label. That gives us tremendous brand power throughout the world really,” said Stemler.

The new law does allow for some breathing room. Wine makers will have until January of 2019 to change their labels.

“You know it’s going to take that long to get things printed up, make sure we add that to the labels. So it’s going to take that long to add it to the labels, but it will be great to spread the word about Monterey County grapes,” said Hahn Family Wines Director of Viticulture Andy Mitchell.

Monterey County has nine growing areas. Each area is known for something special, and to wine drinkers the AVA alone can offer a certain amount of reassurance.

“We’re finding that this area is really exceptional for growing the burgundy varietals. Each growing area is unique and special and so we want to protect that,” said Mitchell.

Protect the brand while spreading the word. Monterey County wines are growing in popularity around the world.

“We host international trade groups regularly, you know China is really interested in Monterey wines, which is a fascinating market, a huge market. So I just see our appeal growing, our wine tourism growing its incredible,” said Stemler.
