Santa Cruz enforcing triple fines for Fourth of July
Chasing waves, soaking up the sun and eating BBQ was the scene on Santa Cruz beaches and parks this Independence Day weekend.
“Sometimes it’s packed and it’s definitely hard to find parking, but it’s definitely worth it,” said Sara Haskell of San Jose.
But before anyone can even begin to celebrate, guests are greeted by signs, warning that triple fines are in place for public intoxication and lighting fireworks.
“We were a little surprised when we saw no fireworks,” said Anell Mendez, who traveled from Stockton. “So you know it’s a bummer. You kind of expect fireworks. It’s Fourth of July.”
“At least there’s a little bit more safety precaution going into it hopefully,” said Melanie Shelton of San Jose. “But I don’t know if it will make a difference.”
With increased tourism and Fourth of July celebrations underway, Santa Cruz police said the safety enactment zones are to keep residents and visitors safe.
“We welcome people coming into Santa Cruz and we want to make sure everybody has a great time while they’re here,” said Joyce Blaschke, Santa Cruz police spokeswoman.
The triple fines are also being issued for noise violations, trespassing, graffiti and urinating in public.
“All hands will be on deck,” said Blaschke. “We’ll have every available officer patrolling our neighborhoods, beaches and parks.”
But police said the illegal use of fireworks is their biggest concern.
“They’re a fire danger, number one,” said Blaschke. “Fireworks are scary for our older citizens and for our pets in our community.”
Although this weekend will be a busy one for law enforcement, they’re encouraging everyone to report any violations they see.
“Notify our officers so we can do something about it,” said Blaschke.
The safety enhancement zone will be in effect until the July 5th.
