Greenfield Police go door-to-door with survey

If the cops come knocking on your door, don’t be afraid to open up. They’re justt here to take a survey.

Greenfield Police officers were on foot Friday going door-to-door to hear what people really think about different issues.

“Gangs are a problem in my neighborhood,” said one resident

“I would like police to come two times in the night to make sure everything’s ok,” said Beatrice Herrera.

One young man, fearful for his safety, strongly agreed that Greenfield has problem with gangs.

“I don’t feel safe. All this bull**** around, all this gang****, all this you know what I mean, right here in front of my house,” he said. “That’s why I just chill at work, keep myself busy instead of being home or being here in town.”

Some residents said it doesn’t matter if it’s day or night, they don’t feel safe walking outside.

Part of the problem could stem from the fact that the department only has 20 officers on staff.

“It’s very challenging to get people to apply to this department or King City. The southern parts of Monterey County police departments do not pay what the rest of the departments pay,” said Greenfield Police Chief Adele Frese.

On Friday, officers surveyed about six houses per street in the Harvest Way neighborhood. By the end of the two-day community outreach, they planned to speak with at least 500 residents across the city.

Residents were happy to see officers making an effort to connect with the community. They only hope that the department listens to their concerns and makes some changes.

“We’ll dissect everything and analyze it,” said Chief Frese, “and decide on what kind of response, if any, will be necessary.”
