Crime spree in Toro Park neighborhood sparks town hall meeting with Sheriff Bernal

Frustrated residents packed into the Toro Park fire station Tuesday, concerned about an increase in car burglaries and thefts.

“This cluster has really got everybody aware,” said Carol Romo, Toro Park Estates board member.

Romo has lived in Toro Park for 35 years and can’t think of a time where there has been as much crime.

“Don’t invite trouble. That’s our best thing is awareness. We are not in a perfect neighborhood out here,” said Romo.

That’s why Monterey County Sheriff Steve Bernal promised more focus on the community by deputies. He also said they have made several arrests.

“Some of those arrests were people that lived in the homeless encampment in Salinas. It was right after they cleaned out Chinatown. So we’re getting some homeless that are coming out looking for opportunity,” said Bernal.

Bernal also said it’s a countywide problem. Last weekend, 10 cars were hit in a Carmel neighborhood.

“They are going around, they’re just looking for cars that are unlocked and whatever they can take,” said Bernal.

Romo said she always locks her car and it makes her feel safe.

“If you just are aware. I’m not scared. I love Toro Park and everybody else does too,” said Romo.
