Local equestrian athlete makes Olympics

Lauren Billys has been riding horses for almost 20 years, has won big in huge competitions, and has had Olympic dreams for nearly as long.

“The biggest dream I’ve ever had is this, and I’ve had it now for over 15 years,” said Lauren.

They say hard work and dedication pays off. Lauren is living proof.

“I’ve been planning on trying for the Olympics for the past 5 to 6 years, and now that dream has become a reality and I’m here doing that and training for that full time,” said Lauren.

“She just knew this is what she was gonna do and she’s just been amazing,” said Lauren’s coach, Bea Di Grazia.

But Lauren won’t be riding for team USA.

“Because of my Puerto Rican heritage I have the ability to ride for the Puerto Rican Equestrian Team,” said Lauren.

She will be one of about 18 Puerto Rican athletes competing at the summer games, but that’s nothing compared to the number of equestrians selected.

“It’s the top three individually ranked riders in the western hemisphere,” said Lauren.

“She’s a competitor. Throughout her whole lifetime she’s always wanted to win,” said Bea.

But no matter how good a rider one is, you can’t go far without a good horse.

“Purdy is easily one of the best cross-country horses in the world,” said Bea.

Lauren’s horse Purdy has developed a strong bond with her rider.

“When she says this is where we’re going, that’s the only thing he wants to do,” she added.

A feat that isn’t easy as it sounds.

“I don’t think people really understand what it’s like to be a 3-day event rider and have to be the master of three totally disciplines on a horse,” said Bea.

But Lauren has mastered them as her and Purdy hope to bring home gold this summer.

“It’s so much bigger than just me. when I look back I think of all the people that have helped me get there and who are continuing to help me get there at the top of my game so. It’s my heart, you know?”
